The 7-4 scoreline makes it the fixture with the most goals in a single league game since the start of the Premier Soccer League in 1996/97, beating the previous mark set by Platinum Stars’ 6-4 win over Lamontville Golden Arrows in December 2012.
It is not the first time Sundowns have managed to score seven goals in a league game. They managed that feat against Santos and Vaal Professionals in the 1998/99 season, winning both games by 7-1 scorelines. They also defeated AmaZulu 7-1 in 2013/14.
Of course, the most goals they have scored in a game will likely forever be their 24-0 victory over hapless Powerlines FC in the 2012 Nedbank Cup. It is unlikely we will ever see a scoreline like that again.
The most goals scored by a team in a league game in the PSL era is eight, by SuperSport United against AmaZulu, then known as Zulu Royals, in an 8-1 victory in 2004, and by Pirates in an 8-1 success against Marumo Gallants in 2024.
In the latter match, the scoreline was 1-1 at halftime.
Perhaps the more interesting question is when Sundowns last conceded four or more goals in a league fixture.
They did it at the FIFA Club World Cup just last year in their epic 4-3 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, but on the domestic league front it is much rarer.
The last occasion was 11 years ago in a shock 5-0 loss to Bloemfontein Celtic (later purcahsed by the owners of Royal AM) that also really defies explanation.
Celtic were not even that great at the time, but they had a hoodoo over Sundowns and demolished them on the day, one of the biggest defeats of then coach Pitso Mosimane’s career.
Sundowns also shipped four in an epic 4-4 draw with Ajax Cape Town in 2011, and against BidVest Wits (2-4) and SuperSport United (1-4) in 2009, and Golden Arrows (2-4) and Free State Stars (0-4) in 2008. Clearly, it was a difficult time for the club defensively.
They also lost 3-4 to Chiefs in 2005, and the match before that shipped five in a 2-5 loss to Golden Arrows.
They again lost 1-4 in 2002 and 0-4 in 1998 to SuperSport, and 1-4 to Umtata Bush Bucks in 1999.
Siwelele therefore join a fairly select set of clubs to have scored four against Sundowns in the last 30 years, and are the only club to do so and lose.
