Saturday saw Paris Saint-Germain win their maiden UEFA Champions League in dominant fashion, beating Inter Milan 5-0 in Munich. Here are two stats for each team after the competition’s 70th final.
Paris Saint-Germain: Record-breakers shine in Germany
24 – Paris Saint-Germain dominated and dazzled at the Allianz Arena, setting the largest margin of victory in a European Cup/Champions League final match.
Now, 22 years on from Marseille’s 1-0 win over AC Milan, France finally have another European champion. Les Parisiens became the 24th different club to call themselves champions of Europe, becoming the second club in three years to do so for the first time.
5 – PSG broke several records en route to glory. They became the first Ligue 1 team to complete the league-cup-UCL treble, and the ninth side overall.
As previously mentioned, they handed out the heaviest ever defeat in a European Cup showpiece. However, the number five has another piece of significance.
Of all the European Cup/Champions League winners across the seven decades, no team has more losses en route to glory than PSG’s five. Three of those came in the league phase, before they turned things around in the knockout phases, losing just twice.
Inter Milan: Sorry Nerazzurri end up trophyless
4 – It was a sour way to end what had to be seen as an excellent campaign for Inter Milan. Still, the Nerazzurri will be without a trophy in 2024/25. It was their seventh European Cup/Champions League final appearance (their fourth defeat), and a second in three years.
Inter became the sixth different club to lose in the showpiece four or more times. They join AC Milan and Liverpool with that many. Bayern Munich and Benfica have five each, while Juventus hold the record with seven losses.
17 – No country has had it rougher in the UCL final than Italian ones. Excluding the 2002/03 final, which featured a pair of Serie A teams, there have been 28 editions of the competition where the final is contested by a Serie A club.
Inter’s loss on Saturday was the 17th occasion in which the Italian team fell to defeat. That is seven clear of Germany with 10 (excluding the all-Bundesliga showpiece 12 years ago) for the most of any country.
