US Open LIVE: Zverev cruises through after Gauff and Van de Zandschulp advance

06:45 CET – That’s all from Flushing Meadows for another day, and we now know the final eight participants on both the men’s and women’s sides.

There’s no rest for the wicked, however; the quarter-finals get going this evening from around 17:30 CET! Tune back in then as we motor on towards the conclusion of the US Open.

05:45 CET – Alexander Zverev ends the night’s action with a 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (3) win over Luciano Darderi.

After dominating the first two sets, the top seed was given a much harder time by the Italian, who stepped up his game in the third set to make it more of a challenge.

In the end, Zverev prevailed in a tiebreak to qualify for the last eight, where he will meet Van de Zandschulp.

04:00 CET – Botic van de Zandschulp completed an incredible 3-6, 6-7 (0), 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3), 6-4 comeback win over France’s Arthur Gea to make a return to the US Open last eight.

The Dutchman had 15 aces in the match, finding a way through despite hitting 87 unforced errors. Breaks of serve were quite prevalent, with both players having seven breaks each. In the end, it is van de Zandschulp who finds a way through. He will face either Zverev or Darderi next.

03:45 CET – After a hard-fought battle that went nearly four hours, Karen Khachanov is into his second US Open quarter-final. The world number 50 edged Learner Tien 7-5, 4-6, 6-7 (8), 6-1, 6-4.

Khachanov, who reached the semi-finals four years ago, broke the American nine times over the course of the match. That proved key, especially in the fifth set, with Tien losing his serve when trying to stay in the contest. Next for Khachanov will be Alexander Blockx.

02:50 CET – Coco Gauff is back in the US Open quarter-finals. The world number four gets past fellow American Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-4 in 99 minutes to advance.

Gauff had her opponent under pressure on her serve, creating 11 break opportunities and converting five of them. Next for her is another teenager, Mirra Andreeva.

23:45 CET – Alexander Blockx becomes the first-ever Belgian man to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final!

The big-serving 21-year-old has done so with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 win over Francisco Cerundolo, prevailing in a tight battle that lasted for well over three hours.

An excellent ball-striker who makes full use of his 6’4 frame, Blockx is developing into a real force.

23:14 CET – Elena Rybakina roars into the last eight of the US Open!

There were concerns about the world number two’s fitness heading into this tournament, but she looked to be at her scintillating best in a 6-1, 6-4 win over Naomi Osaka that she claimed in just one hour and seven minutes.

In a relentless display of power and precision, Rybakina hit 29 winners and seven aces, and looked like a serious title contender.

22:38 CET – Rybakina has absolutely dominated the first set, winning it 6-1 in just 22 minutes. She’s hit 11 winners to Osaka’s three, and has lost just two points on her first serve.

Osaka just can’t deal with her opponent’s power right now, and needs to step things up.

21:50 CET – Next up on Arthur Ashe is a real blockbuster, with reigning Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina going up against two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka.

They’re two players who possess the talent to beat anyone on their day, and who haven’t been able to consistently get the most out of that talent in recent years, but with Swiatek out and Zheng awaiting in the quarters, both will fancy their chances of claiming one of their biggest triumphs in years.

19:53 CET – Swiatek seemed to have a thigh problem, but full credit has to go to Zheng, who turned that match around with some glorious attacking tennis.

With nothing to lose when 5-0 down, she started playing on the front foot and hitting some big shots, and when she started to get more first serves in, Swiatek couldn’t deal with them.

19:38 CET – Within minutes of each other, Mirra Andreeva and Zheng Qinwen have sealed their spots in the quarter-finals!

Fifth seed Andreeva found herself a set down against world number 25 Anastasia Potapova, but she then edged a tight second set to take things to a decider, where she raced into a 3-1 lead and saw things out after her opponent unfortunately picked up an injury in the final game.

The big story of the day, though, is Zheng’s triumph, with the qualifier winning a set from 5-0 down for the second match in a row and then claiming the second 6-3 to beat six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek.

There were fears that reigning Olympic champion Zheng’s best days were behind her when injuries dropped her from fourth in the rankings to outside the world’s top 100, but she’s roaring back onto the scene in New York.

18:50 CET – A truly remarkable first set has gone the way of Zheng on Arthur Ashe. The world number 21 was trailing 5-0 after less than 20 minutes, but then won seven games in a row to take the opener 7-5, saving four set points in the process.

Even more incredibly, Zheng has now won two sets in a row from 5-0 down, having staged such a comeback in the last round.

Can Swiatek clear her head and bounce back from that seismic collapse?

17:05 CET – We are only a few minutes away from the start of the action for the day, with Mirra Andreeva taking on Anastasia Potapova in Louis Armstrong Stadium imminently, and Iga Swiatek facing Zheng Qinwen on Arthur Ashe in about half an hour. The winners of those ties will reach the quarter-finals.
