The 38-year-old Grobler has 129 goals as he heads into the new 2026/27 campaign, four behind record-holder Peter Shalulile, who has left Mamelodi Sundowns for Young Africans in Tanzania.
Former Bafana Bafana striker Siyabonga Nomvethe also has 129 goals, though his career is long over.
The goal tally does not include strikes in the Motsepe Foundation Championship and only counts those scored while representing top-flight clubs.
That does have an effect – Shalulile netted 20 times for Highlands Park in the second tier, so his overall tally in South Africa is actually 153.
But for the purposes of the record scorer in the PSL, those goals are excluded.
Grobler, if he can stay fit, has a real chance to top that this season, having netted 11 times in an injury-hit campaign for Sekhukhune United in 2025/26.
When fit and firing, he is among the best finishers the top flight has seen and has reached double figures for goals in all competitions in three of the last four seasons.
He reunites with coach Gavin Hunt, who he worked with at SuperSport United and whose direct style of football suits the veteran forward.
Grobler and Ashley du Preez together could be a good foil, with one a target man and the other a pacy forward who can stretch the defence.
Shalulile achieved his tally in nine top-flight seasons in the PSL, including one in which he managed 30 goals – 23 in the league and seven in the cup.
In fact, he netted 75 goals in just three seasons between 2020/21 and 2022/23, the most prolific spell by a striker in PSL history.
There is a chance Shalulile, who is now 32, could return to South Africa to add to his tally, but for now the record is there for the taking for Grobler.
