Chelsea thought they could get through this season without making a major change in goal but that gamble is already looking like a mistake.
The Carabao Cup should have been a chance for Filip Jorgensen to quietly stake a claim for himself.
Instead, it became a night that might define his Chelsea future for all the wrong reasons. Against League One Lincoln City, Jorgensen delivered a display riddled with uncertainty and misjudgment. Chelsea scraped a 2–1 win, but it was their goalkeeper who left many talking – for the wrong reasons.
Confidence and conviction are two qualities you cannot fake as a goalkeeper. Sources had already indicated doubts inside Stamford Bridge about Jorgensen’s ability to step up at elite level. This latest performance will only intensify scrutiny.
In truth, those doubts are not restricted to him. Robert Sanchez, the No.1 who was supposed to bring stability, has also raised concern. His red card inside five minutes against Manchester United at the weekend summed up the unease around Chelsea’s current goalkeeping picture.
Behind the scenes, this is being taken seriously. Chelsea had made an early approach for AC Milan’s Mike Maignan in the summer – a move that never materialised.
They also continue to monitor Mike Penders, their young goalkeeper on loan at Strasbourg, who is highly thought of by decision-makers at Stamford Bridge. The plan was to review the goalkeeping position at the end of the season, but insiders admit that timeline may have to be torn up.
Chelsea’s recruitment team and coaching staff are not yet fully aligned on their views but it seems unlikely they can limp through another campaign with uncertainty between the sticks.
Jorgensen’s struggles against lower-league opposition, coupled with Sanchez’s inconsistency, may bring forward the decision-making process. The expectation will be that Chelsea look at the January window, rather than waiting until summer, to address the issue.
With Maignan admired across Europe and Penders developing well, those options are already in play.
They may have to consider what other options can also be looked at because what was hoped could be a season of patience, may now turn into a mid-season goalkeeping shake-up.
