After 13 long months on the sidelines, Abdul Mumin made his long-awaited return to competitive football on Thursday evening, coming off the bench in the 81st minute as Rayo Vallecano secured a vital 1-0 victory over Espanyol at Estadio de Vallecas.
It was a moment that drew warm applause from the home faithful who had watched Mumin fight every single day to get back to this point.
The result itself carries enormous significance in the context of Rayo’s season. The win sends them five points clear of the La Liga relegation zone with just six games left to play.

A nightmare that began in March 2025

By late 2025, he had returned to individual training on the grass at Rayo’s facilities, and in the weeks leading up to Thursday’s match, he had been participating in behind-closed-doors friendly matches.
That readiness was confirmed on Thursday night, when coach Íñigo Pérez decided the moment had come to bring him back.
Back where he belongs
When Mumin’s number went up in the 81st minute and he stepped off the bench and onto the Vallecas turf, it brought to an end an absence of 418 days.
The crowd showed massive support for the Ghanaian as he was subbed on with his team mates showing appreciation for a player who has gone through a full cycle of a strenous rehabilitation process.
