Serie A Matches Postponed Due to Funeral of Pope Francis

In a historic and solemn decision, all Serie A matches originally scheduled for Saturday, April 26, have been postponed in observance of the funeral of Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025.

Italian Minister of Civil Protection, Nello Musumeci, confirmed the suspension of Saturday’s sporting events as a sign of national mourning. “The football championship will be suspended, while matches will be played on Sunday,” Musumeci declared following the Council of Ministers’ meeting, which officially proclaimed five days of national mourning.

Affected matches from the 34th round of Serie A include:

  • Como vs Genoa
  • Lazio vs Parma
  • Inter vs Roma

These fixtures will be rescheduled, with new dates to be confirmed by the Lega Serie A in the coming days.

In addition to Serie A, the following matches from other Italian leagues will also be postponed:

  • Serie B: Sudtirol vs Juve Stabia, Catanzaro vs Palermo
  • Serie C (Group C): Final matchday games

CONI President Giovanni Malagò has called for the suspension of all sporting events across Italy on April 26. He also requested a minute of silence during competitive events held throughout the week to honor the memory of the Holy Father.

The funeral service for Pope Francis is scheduled for Saturday morning at 10:00 AM, a moment expected to bring together millions of faithful and dignitaries from around the world.
