Real Madrid announce signing of Xabi Alonso as manager on three-year deal

Spanish coach Xabi Alonso has landed at the Santiago Bernabeu after a successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen to manage Real Madrid.

Real Madrid confirmed Xabi Alonso as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement on Sunday. The Spaniard, who won the Bundesliga, Super Cup and German Cup with Bayer Leverkusen, has decided to end his time in Germany to take up a new role at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Alonso, who could have left Leverkusen the previous summer (Liverpool and Bayern sought his services), opted to stay on for another season with the team with whom he made his first successes as a coach. Liverpool signed Arne Slot and Bayern signed Vincent Kompany.

Madrid were always close to his side and after several months of talks have agreed to bring in the manager ahead of the Club World Cup.

In a statement, Real Madrid said: “Real Madrid C.F. announces that Xabi Alonso will be the coach of Real Madrid for the next three seasons, from June 1st, 2025 to June 30th, 2028.

“Tomorrow at 12:30 CET, Xabi Alonso will be presented as Real Madrid’s new coach in a ceremony that will take place at Ciudad Real Madrid.

“Beforehand, the president of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez, will receive Xabi Alonso for the protocol act of signing the contract that links our new coach with the club for the next three seasons.

“After the presentation, Xabi Alonso will attend the media in the press room of Ciudad Real Madrid.”
