Tagger will move to a career-high ranking of 45th in the world tomorrow after overcoming an opening-set scare to triumph in one hour and 30 minutes. She will be the youngest player inside the top 50.
“It was just an amazing match. I feel super happy right now. I was a bit tired and nervous at the beginning, but right now I’m just super happy, happy that I turned it around in the first set, and kept going with my way in the second set,” Tagger said after recovering from a poor start to the match.
“For me, it’s not that easy to start when I’m down in the set, but you know, it can happen. It’s part of the game. So I just told myself, it’s just one break in the end. So I kept fighting, and yeah, I turned it around,” she added.
The aggressive Austrian possesses a glorious single-handed backhand – one of just four in the top 100 – and hit nine aces as she denied Snigur her first WTA triumph.
Tagger trailed 2-5 in the first set, but managed to find her feet to retrieve the break before winning the opener on a tiebreak.
From then on, it was far more straightforward for Tagger, cruising to the finishing line to get her hands on the trophy in the Czech capital.
