Where did Canada play their group-stage games?

Canada’s opening match of the World Cup was against Bosnia Herzegovina on Friday, June 12th, at BMO Field in Toronto, ON. The venue is known as Toronto Stadium during the tournament for sponsorship reasons. A temporary stand was added to increase the capacity to 45,000 for the tournament. It is the home of Toronto FC in MLS, as well as AFC Toronto of the Northern Super League.

Canada’s second and third group games, against Qatar on Thursday, June 18th, and versus Switzerland on Wednesday, June 24th, occurred at BC Place in Vancouver, BC. The 54,000-capacity venue is typically used by the Vancouver Whitecaps, who also play in MLS.

Canada’s World Cup knockout schedule and venues

If Canada had finished top of the group, they would have remained in Vancouver for their Round of 32 match. As it turned out, they finished second, meaning they faced the second-placed side from Group A, South Africa.

After beating Bafana Bafana, they fell 3-0 to Morocco in the round of 16, ending their historic run. A strong first half showing was undone with three second half goals as Les Rouges bowed out of the tournament.
