Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards sidelined for up to two months; set to undergo major surgery

The Minnesota Timberwolves are 3-1 early in the 2026/27 NBA season, and with high expectations, the start of star guard Anthony Edwards has given this fanbase even more optimism as they finally push for an NBA Finals appearance with this core.

Through their first four games, Edwards has been taking his game to another level, averaging 33.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, with his 133 points through the teams first four games a Timberwolves franchise record.

Unfortunately, the good times can’t always last, as teams throughout the NBA need to find a way to battle through injuries, and now, the Timberwolves will be forced to do that as the major string of injuries early in the season continue to pile up.

This time, it’s Edwards, as NBA Insider Shams Charania revealed on Tuesday that the star guard will miss ‘up to two-months of action’ as he is officially set to undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his ailing right knee, something that has clearly been bothering the star guard.

Last season, Edwards missed 21 games as he continued his ascent into true superstardom, and in that time, Minnesota posted a record of 12-9, and with the addition of LaMelo Ball this off-season, they’ve clearly got someone they believe can steer the ship in Edwards’ absence.

Beyond Edwards in four games, the T-Wolves have been getting it done by committee, with the likes of Jaden McDaniels (15.0 PPG), Ball (14.8 PPG, 6.3 APG), Terrence Shannon Jr. (13.0 PPG), Ayo Dosunmu (12.0 PPG) and Jonathan Kuminga (11.5 PPG) stepping up and giving the team some dominant overall performances.

Early in the season, it’s unlikely that the team will move to bring in a piece for Edwards, as Dosunmu is likely to take over his role as the starting two-guard, and as a result, rookie Isaiah Evans will likely need to play a significant role. On paper, this isn’t a team that can win the NBA Championship without No. 1 in the lineup, but if they can figure things out without him over the next 6-8 weeks, there’s a good chance that it will make them a much stronger unit by seasons end.
